Building Connections. Strengthening Rural Healh.
The Causeway
The Causeway is Missouri’s statewide community of practice for rural health. Created by the Missouri Rural Health Association (MRHA), The Causeway brings together people and organizations working to improve health and quality of life across rural communities.
More than a networking platform, The Causeway serves as shared infrastructure for collaboration, learning, problem-solving, and advocacy. It provides a space where members can connect across geographic, organizational, and professional boundaries to share knowledge, exchange resources, identify solutions, and work together on issues affecting rural Missouri.
Today, The Causeway connects hundreds of rural health stakeholders and continues to grow as a trusted hub for collaboration and collective action.
Why The Causeway Exists
Rural communities face complex challenges that no single organization can solve alone.
Provider shortages, hospital closures, transportation barriers, broadband limitations, behavioral health needs, workforce challenges, and chronic disease disparities affect communities across Missouri. At the same time, innovative solutions are emerging every day from local leaders, providers, nonprofits, educators, and community organizations.
The challenge is not a lack of ideas.
The challenge is connection.
MRHA created The Causeway to ensure that knowledge, resources, and successful strategies do not remain isolated within individual communities. By creating a space for people to learn from one another, share experiences, and coordinate efforts, The Causeway helps strengthen the entire rural health ecosystem.
More Than a Network
The Causeway was built on a simple belief:
The people closest to rural challenges are often closest to the solutions.
Rather than relying on a top-down approach, The Causeway supports peer-to-peer learning and collaborative problem-solving. Members learn from one another, identify emerging needs, share innovative practices, and build relationships that can lead to meaningful action.
Whether someone is looking for guidance on grant opportunities, healthcare regulations, workforce recruitment, community partnerships, behavioral health initiatives, or innovative models of care, The Causeway provides direct access to a statewide network of expertise and support.
Our Methodology: A Virtual Community of Practice
The Causeway is built using the principles of a Community of Practice model.
A Community of Practice is a group of people who share a common mission and improve their work by learning together over time. Rather than operating as separate organizations addressing similar challenges, participants engage in ongoing conversations, share knowledge, develop relationships, and create collective solutions.
The Causeway’s approach is grounded in several key principles:
Connection
Shared Learning
Collaboration
Collective Problem Solving
Advocacy Through Relationships

Turning Knowledge into Action
Each day, members use The Causeway to find answers, share resources, build partnerships, and support one another.
Whether connecting a provider with a new funding opportunity, helping a nonprofit navigate regulations, identifying best practices for patient care, or linking community leaders to subject matter experts, The Causeway transforms individual knowledge into collective impact.
Discussions on the platform continue to grow as members increasingly use The Causeway to seek peer input, share resources, discuss emerging challenges, and support innovation throughout rural Missouri.
